As a doctor or highly stressed professional, what can I take to reduce my risk?

Doctors, it’s important to take care of your own health too!

Doctors are not invincible.  They get sick, die of heart disease, cancers and other chronic diseases.  In addition, due to high levels of work stress, doctors have a higher rate of depression than the general public.  A meta-analysis of 25 studies found that the suicide rate among male doctors is 40% higher than among men in general,  whereas the rate among female doctors is 130% higher than among women in general (Am J Psychiatry. 2004;161:2295-2302). In another paper, Schernhammer et al reported that doctors are more likely to self-medicate with alcohol and suffer from stress and burn-out  (N Engl J Med. 2005;352:2473-2476).

Doctors are often so busy caring for their patients that they sometimes neglect to look after themselves and their families first.  Keeping healthy and protecting yourself and your family from chronic diseases is the most important thing you can do.  So, don’t be like the cobbler who has no shoes.  Take care of your own health first, by taking these nutraceuticals on a daily basis:

Prostate Protection Formula™ Reduces risk of prostate cancer and BPH.

  • I3C (Indole-3-carbinol cruciferous vegetable extract),  DIM (Di-indole-methane cruciferous extract) and Curcumin (Turmeric extract) protect against and retard the growth of tumour prostate cell mutations.
  • Betasitosterol improves urinary symptoms such as urinary output and bladder emptying. It also inhibits 5-alpha-reductase, thereby preventing the formation of DHT (Di-Hydro-Testosterone), a known risk factor for prostate cell mutation and growth.
  • Pygeum africanum (African plum extract) extract reduces prostate inflammation, cell proliferation and growth.
  • Lycopene (extracted from tomatoes) reduces the risk of prostate cell mutations and tumour growth by 83%.
  • Selenium reduces risk of prostate cell mutations.

Rx: 1 capsule twice daily after meals.

Reduces risk of breast and other cancers.

  • I3C (Indole-3-carbinol) and DIM (Di-Indole-Methane).  These are cruciferous vegetable (broccoli & cauliflower) extracts that reduce the formation of the cancer promoting estrogen, 16-OH estrone.
  • Also contains effective dosages of other cancer protective nutrients such as curcumin (turmeric extract), quercetin, resveratrol, selenium and co-enzyme Q10.
  • Preventatively, I3ComplexTM should be used by all women on HRT, oral contraceptives, and by men & women with a family history of cancer.
  • As a treatment, I3C enhances effectiveness of tamoxifen when combined.

Rx: 1 capsule twice daily after meals.

Vitamin D3 – Reduces heart disease, most cancers and metabolic syndrome.

COMPOSITION: Vitamin D3 1000IU per tablet

  • Up to 80% of South Africans are deficient in vitamin D3.
  • The optimal dose of vitamin D3 is 1000-2000IU daily.  Pregnant women, the elderly and dark skin people are particularly prone to vitamin D deficiency.
  • The D3 form is the most bio-available type of vitamin D, many-fold better absorbed and more effective than the D1 and D2 forms, found in most other vitamin D products.

Rx: 1-2 tablets (1000-2000IU) daily after a meal.

Stress Damage Control™
Reduces risk of stress induced myocardial infarction & improves stress-coping ability.

COMPOSITION: Rhodiola Rosea and Ashwagandha standardised herbal extracts.

  • The June 2004 journal of epidemiology reported that continuous stress at work increases the risk of myocardial infarction by 300-600%.
  • Studies also show that extracts from the Rhodiola and Ashwagandha plants, provide significant protection for the cardiovascular system, by suppressing excessive adrenaline and cortisol released during times of stress.
  • Other studies show that Rhodiola enhances cognitive ability, especially under stressful situations.

Rx: 1-2 capsules after breakfast.

SAMe butanedisulfonate – An anti-depressant amino acid, without the weight-gain and libido-reducing effects of SSRI’s.

COMPOSITION: S-adenosyl-methionine butanedisulfonate 400mg per tablet.

  • SAMe causes increased serotonin turnover and elevated dopamine and noradrenaline levels. SAMe supplementation also works by altering cellular membrane fluidity.

Rx: 1 tablet twice daily on an empty stomach.

Silibinin – An extract of Milk thistle that protects the liver and kidneys from hepato-renal toxicity, including alcohol damage.

COMPOSITION: Silibinin (an extract from Milk Thistle) 155mg per capsule.

  • Silibinin decreases mortality and improves liver function tests in patients with alcoholic liver disease.
  • Silibinin causes an alteration of the outer hepatocyte cell membrane that prevents toxin penetration. It also stimulates nucleolar polymerase A, resulting in increased ribosomal protein synthesis, which can stimulate liver regeneration and the formation of new hepatocytes. Silibinin also has antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulating effects that are also be beneficial in liver disease. It also inhibits beta-glucuronidase, which helps protect against hepatic injury and possibly colon cancer. Inhibition of beta-glucuronidase is thought to reduce the hydrolysis of glucuronides into toxic metabolites in the liver and intestine.

Rx: 1 capsule daily.
