Do you think that GPs (and specialists/other practitioners) know enough about herbal and traditional medicine, especially in the light of the fact that use is so wide-spread?

They don’t know enough yet, but many are learning more and more about it. With regards to complementary and herbals medicines, I offer a course for doctors interested in learning more, covering topics such as indications, effectiveness, safety, contraindications and medicine-herb interactions. It is important that doctors and pharmacists continue to keep themselves up to date. Most of the medicines we commonly prescribe today originate from plants and plants still are used medicinally. Traditional African medicines can be more problematic, because often times the active ingredients in these are not disclosed by traditional healers. There have been cases of death from traditional African medicine use. This needs urgent attention by regulators.
