Why can't I buy DHEA over the counter?

DHEA is listed as a Schedule 5 substance in the schedules of the Medicines and Related Substances Act. We thus have no choice but to schedule it otherwise the MCC could force us to stop the sale.

DHEA is a hormone and the SA MCC follows the European/Australian view that all hormones need to be controlled and prescribed under medical supervision. These regulatory bodies are adamant in this belief and have rejected previous submissions we have submitted for changes in the schedules for hormones.

The USA is one of the few countries that allows over the counter sales and this is due to a unique regulatory loop hole that only exists there. In fact many countries ban DHEA, so we are lucky to have access even if it is restricted.
